Oltre 50 fotografie - di grande formato e per lo più inedite per l’Italia - per rivivere alcuni dei principali appuntamenti musicali rock del 1969, un anno irripetibile. In estrema sintesi è questo il significato di Woodstock e gli altri. Cinquanta foto di pace, amore e musica, la mostra fotografica dell’americana Amalie R. Rothschild che da una ventina d’anni vive e lavora a Firenze.

Ideata da Marco Ferri, curata da Amalie R. Rothschild e dallo stesso Ferri, con il coordinamento di Jacopo Celona, la mostra si svolgerà dal 3 al 29 ottobre 2019 nello spazio espositivo del Consiglio Regionale della Toscana intitolato a Carlo Azeglio Campi, in via dei Pucci 16, a Firenze, è patrocinata dalla XII Florence Biennale, Mostra Internazionale di Arte Contemporanea e Design, dal Consolato degli Stati Uniti di Firenze (che quest’anno celebra i 200 anni dall’apertura della sede toscana), e dall’Associazione di Amicizia Italia-Israele Prato Pistoia, ed è sponsorizzata da Angelo Pontecorboli Editore.

Il concept

In occasione del 50° anniversario del Festival di Woodstock - che si svolse dal 15 al 18 agosto 1969 a Bethel, nello Stato di New York, alla presenza di centinaia di migliaia di persone,  viene organizzata a Firenze la mostra fotografica di Amalie R. Rothschild, americana di nascita e fiorentina di adozione. I quattro giorni del festival, durante i quali si esibirono i maggiori esponenti della musica rock degli anni Sessanta, tra cui Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Santana e gli Who, sono infatti documentati dalla Rothschild, che custodisce un vero e proprio tesoro culturale da condividere con la cittadinanza fiorentina di cui la fotografa fa parte da quasi 20 anni.

Ma non basta: l’obiettivo della mostra è sì la celebrazione del più grande evento musicale della storia, ma anche degli altri grandi eventi rock che si tennero in quell’anno irripetibile - ovvero il Festival di Newport (luglio 1969), quello dell’Isola di Wight (settembre 1969), il live dei Rolling Stones al Madison Square Garden di New York (27 novembre 1969) e i vari concerti del Fillmore East (durante tutto l’anno) - durante i quali la fotografa-regista scattò innumerevoli fotografie oggi consegnate alla storia della musica nonché di un’intera generazione.

Il percorso espositivo

Dopo una sala introduttiva che si troverà all’ingresso della mostra, la prima sala ospiterà una ventina di fotografie-testimonianze del Festival di Woodstock con immagini del prima-durante-e dopo il Festival.

La seconda sala, denominata “Altri eventi”, mostrerà fotografie in bianco e nero e a colori scattate al Festival di Newport, quello dell’Isola di Wight con gli Who e Bob Dylan, al live dei Rolling Stones, in cui compaiono Tina Turner e Janis Joplin, Mick Jagger & Co., alla “prima” dell’opera rock Tommy al Fillmore East di New York, e Newport con Miles Davis, James Brown e altri.

La terza sala è interamente dedicata ai live del Fillmore East, il locale newyorkese di Bill Graham dove Amalie R. Rothschild faceva parte della Joshua Light Show e scattò fotografie di alcuni grandissimi eventi musicali che vide protagonisti, tra gli altri, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, Elton John, i Grateful Dead.

La fotografa

Fotografa e regista di fama internazionale, Amalie R. Rothschild ha conseguito un BFA (1967) in Graphic Design presso la Rhode Island School of Design, dove ha studiato fotografia con Harry Callahan e ha ottenuto un MFA (1969) in produzione cinematografica presso l’Institute of Film and Television della New York University, dove ha anche studiato fotografia con Paul Caponigro. Dal 1968 al 1974 ha lavorato a lungo come fotografa free-lance in campo musicale, le sue fotografie sono apparse su “The New York Times”, “Newsweek”, “Time-Life Books”, “Life Magazine”, “The Village Voice”, “Rolling Stone”, “After Dark” e molte altre pubblicazioni. Dal 1969 al 1971 ha lavorato con il Joshua Light Show al Fillmore East Theater di New York producendo fotografia di effetti speciali, diapositive, grafica, film e loop cinematografici utilizzati durante le esibizioni. Aveva accesso illimitato sul palcoscenico e nel backstage a tutti gli eventi al Fillmore East, e faceva parte dello staff al Festival di Woodstock del 1969.

Durante quel periodo ha fotografato la maggior parte dei principali eventi di musica rock sulla costa orientale tra cui il 1969 Newport Festival, Tanglewood 1969 e 1970, The Who's 1969 prima americana della loro opera rock Tommy, i Rolling Stones al Madison Square Garden nel novembre 1969, il tour di Bob Dylan nel 1974 e, in Inghilterra, il Festival dell'Isola di Wight del 1969. Rolling Stone ha pubblicato una delle sue fotografie di Bob Dylan sulla copertina del numero 43. La sua produzione fotografica è diffusa e pubblicata ampiamente in tutto il mondo.

Regista esperta e talentuosa, dal 1969 produce e dirige documentari incentrati sul rapporto tra artisti e società, tra cui “Conversations with Willard Van Dyke” (1981) e “Painting the Town: Illusionistic Murals of Richard Haas” (1990). I suoi film sono stati presentati e premiati in occasione di vari dei maggiori festival internazionali, trasmessi dalle reti televisive pubbliche di molti paesi (PBS, ABC, BBC, RAI, ecc.) e in molti tra i più importanti musei al mondo, tra cui il Museum of Modern Art di New York e lo Smithsonian Institution di Washington.

Ha esposto le sue opere fotografiche in mostre personali e collettive in tutto il mondo, tra cui “Summer of Love: Art of the Psychedelic Era” (Tate Gallery, Liverpool, 2005;  Kunsthalle Schirn, Frankfurt, 2006; Kunsthalle, Vienna, Austria, 2007; The Whitney Museum, New York, NY, 2007), “We Want Miles” (Musée de la Musique, Paris, France, 2009; Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Québec, Canada, 2010; Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 2011). Molte delle sue opere fanno parte di importanti collezioni pubbliche e private.

Fifty photographs of peace, love and music

More than 50 photographs,  in large format and mostly unsseen in Italy,  to relive some of the major rock music events of 19669 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock Festival.

The photographs of internationally noted photographer and director Amalie R. Rothschild who was on staff at the Woodstock Festival in August 1969, narrate the four days during which the major exponents of rock music of the 1960s performed.

The protagonists of the exhibition “Woodstock and the Others” are also other great events of rock music which took place in that one and only inimitable year of 1969 - the Newport Festival (July), the Isle of Wight (September), the Rolling Stones at Madison Square Garden (November) and various concerts at the Fillmore East throughout the year including Jimi Hendrix’s New Year’s Eve show December 31, 1969 - during which the photographer-director shot innumerable photos which today are part of the history of music as well as an entire generation.

The exhibition route is as follows:

First Room “Woodstock”:

Photographs which bear witness to the before-during-after of the Woodstock Festival

Second Room “Other Events”:

Black and white and color photographs taken at the Newport Festival with James Brown, B.B. King and Miles Davis, the Isle of Wight with The Who and Bob Dylan, and the Rolling Stones at Madison Square Garden with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards & company along with Tina Turner and Janis Joplin.

Third Room:

The Fillmore East Live dedicated to Bill Graham’s New York theater where Amalie R. Rothschild was on staff as part of the Joshua Light Show and made pictures of many great music events and stars like Joni Mitchell, Santana, the Grateful Dead, The Who’s American premiere of their rock opera “Tommy,” and Jimi Hendrix and Band of Gypsys New Year’s Eve concert on December 31, 1969.

The exhibition is presented under the auspices of the XII Florence Biennale, Exposition of International Contemporary Art and Design, the U.S. Consulate of Florence, and the Association of Italian-Israeli Friendship of Prato Pistoia Firenze, with the sponsorship of Angelo Pontecorboli Editore.      

Amalie R. Rothschild

Amalie R. Rothschild is an internationally recognized and award winning photographer and filmmaker.  She has a BFA (1967) in Graphic Design from Rhode Island School of Design where she spent her senior year on their European Honors Program in Rome, Italy. She studied photography with Harry Callahan, and has an MFA (1969) in Film Production from New York University’s Graduate Institute of Film and Television where she also studied photography with Paul Caponigro.  From 1968 to 1974 she worked extensively as a free-lance photographer in the music field, her photographs appearing in The New York Times, Newsweek, Time-Life Books, Life Magazine, The Village Voice, Rolling Stone, After Dark and many other publications.  From 1969 to 1971 she worked with the Joshua Light Show at the Fillmore East Theater in New York producing special effects photography, slides, graphics, films and film loops used during performances and was considered the theater’s unofficial house photographer.  She had unlimited access onstage and backstage to all the happenings at the Fillmore East, and was also on staff at the 1969 Woodstock Festival. 

During that period she photographed most of the major rock music events on the East Coast including the 1969 Newport Festival, Tanglewood 1969 & 1970, The Who’s U.S. premiere of their rock opera Tommy and the Rolling Stones at Madison Square Garden, Bob Dylan’s 1974 tour, and in England the 1969 Isle of Wight Festival, as well as anti-war/peace demonstrations in the U.S. during the 1960s and the 1967 Cannes Film Festival. Her monograph Live at the Fillmore East: A Photographic Memoir, published in 1999, was reprinted six times

A skilled and veteran filmmaker, she has been producing and directing documentaries since 1969 with special emphasis on social issues as revealed through the lives of people in the arts including the titles “Conversations with Willard Van Dyke” (1981) and “Painting the Town: Illusionistic Murals of Richard Haas” (1990).  Her films have been shown and received prizes in many film festivals  internationally, have aired on public television in many countries (PBS, BBC, ABC, RAI ecc.) and been presented in programs in many important museums including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.

She has shown her photographs in numerous solo and group exhibitions in America and Europe, among them “Summer of Love: Art of the Psychedelic Era” (Tate Gallery, Liverpool, 2005;  Kunsthalle Schirn, Frankfurt, 2006; Kunsthalle, Vienna, Austria, 2007; The Whitney Museum, New York, NY, 2007); “We Want Miles” (Musée de la Musique, Paris, France, 2009; Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Québec, Canada, 2010; Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 2011); Woodstock 50th Anniversary Exhibition, Bethel Woods Center & Museum, 2019. In addition, her works are included in many public and private collections.
